Place the ruler with the sides that says folded edge on the corner. Use the rotary cutter to cut all around. The ruler has seam allowances included. If you prefer you can trace all around with a pen and then use scissors to cut all around. I used zig zag to prevent the knit from stretching. This skirt has an elastic waist band but I made a nice belt to go over the elastic. I cut the belt long so I could tie it twice around my waist and make a bow. When I took this picture the hem was not done yet. I followed all the steps above but the difference is that I added a layer of tulle that I gathered at the waist before adding it to the base polka dot fabric. I also cut extra panels for the tulle so there was more fabric around to gather at the waist to give it a fuller look. Then mark the length of the skirt from the waist line down and that is going to be the hem line. You have to mark with a ruler or measuring tape moving it until you have marked across the width of the fabric. See the white lines. I chose to mark on the right side of the fabric because I am using a sliver of soap as my chalk. The soap line will disappear with the steam of the iron. I personally love to use slivers of soaps to mark on my fabrics. I like to increase the width of the zig zag and lower the length of the zig zag. I cut my elastic 10” (the elastic is folded in the picture) but I sew the elastic at 8.75” so the circumference of the elastic was 17.5” This measurement will go to fit the waist line of the skirt that is around 22” https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6085e282f7080a3021a58356/38a40b24-1b2b-4d0e-ae3e-2723697cb0cd/IMG_2397.JPG Blog - Sewing a Circle Skirt - Make it stand out I sew the elastic to the skirt with a zig zag stitch. When sewing the elastic to the skirt you will need to stretch the elastic while you sew. Remember that the elastic is smaller than the skirt. This is why having the 4 points marked will be helpful because you will know exactly how much to stretch the elastic between each pin as you sew the elastic. Remember to keep the needle down grabbing the fabric and the elastic when you need to stretch the elastic. This part might require a bit of practice but just go very slow. I am sure you can do it! If you wonder how much of the fabric to put under the elastic I do around a 1/5”. You only need to mark the waist line and the hem line. Remember that your fabric is folded in a way that right now you have 4 layers of fabric with no seams on any of the sides. The inspiration came from a wonderful vintage fabric that my husband’s grandmother had and I was lucky to inherit it. This fabric has a cute print of bunnies and flowers in pastel colors. I made this table runner while we were living in Ukraine and I was looking for a table runner to decorate our table. I had nice pieces of linens so I used them for the base of this table runner. I wanted the table runner to be light and soft just like the piece of vintage fabric so I did not use any interfacings. I added a few appliques on the corners. I only used wonder under to fuse them to the linen and did some hand stitching around the shape of the flowers. I also remember cutting these flower appliques on the bias so the edges will not fray. I remember looking through the windows of our hotel into that huge new city and wonder: what is out there in store for my family? for me? What new friends are we going to meet? Are we going to be happy here? What if we do not like it? How am I going to continue to keep my little business? Can I still do it? It was during those days that I seriously was thinking and researching how I could grow my business despite not being in the States. You can choose where and how you want them to be on your apron. I placed mine right over the chest area. When you are sure where you want the letters to go then fuse them very well with an iron and lots of steam! The letters will glue to the base fabric because of the wonder under that was applied on the back of the fabric for the letters. *If you can not find wonder under, use craft glue to keep the letters in place while embroidering them. This part takes a while, I will not lie! But just have some nice music, a nice podcast to listen to and just sew along! I leave the ends and beginning threads hanging long because I do not backstitch it with the sewing machine. I actually secure the stitches with a needle by hand…I know it is an extra step but I like how seamless the effect is when I do not see the backstitches of the sewing machine. Since my very first project I have not stopped sewing. As a little girl, I discovered the incredible feeling of creating something with my own hands. Later in life, I continued that passion and got a degree in Fashion Design from the Technological University of Quito-Ecuador. After graduation, I had the opportunity to make period costumes for the City Museum of Quito. Later, I had a small business making clothes that I designed, hand painted, screen printed, and sewed, which I sold to tourists in the Galapagos Islands. In the United States, I worked for the Washington National Opera in the Costume Department where I learned even more about sewing techniques --and opera of course!
